Born in Tainan in 1920 and died in 2016, Hsu Wu-yung graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Tokyo Imperial University. While practicing medicine, he remained actively engaged in art. Hsu's work incorporated the visual vocabularies of Cubism and Surrealism, which were combined with imagined landscapes drawn from his travels and elements of Taiwan’s local culture. Characterized by a romantic and imaginative sensibility, his work gradually developed into a distinctive artistic style that he termed “Romanticism.”
