Born in Tainan in 1901 and died in 1974, Kuo Po-chuan was a pioneering figure in the development of modern art in Tainan. He served as the founding president of the Tainan Art Research Association and was actively involved in fostering the city’s artistic development. After studying Western painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, Kuo developed a distinctive technique of applying oil paint to rice paper, combining the translucency and fluidity of the medium with a highly expressive use of color and brushwork. His paintings are particularly noted for their ability to capture the intense light and distinctive atmosphere of southern Taiwan.
