Born in India in 1978, Sharbendu De holds a Master’s degree in Photojournalism from the University of Westminster in the United Kingdom. Working as an artist, writer, and scholar, he has long explored the question of human belonging. Growing up, he witnessed friends gradually leave their hometowns, and he himself went abroad to study in the United Kingdom before spending many years living and working away from home. These experiences prompted him to reconsider the meaning of homeland and how urbanization, policies, and environmental change shape people’s connections with the land.
