Ancestral Spirits NO.1, 1996
01 Tainan Art Museum

The Ancestral Spirits Series does not depict the ancestral spirits themselves, but instead reconsiders ancestral culture within the context of contemporary faith. Through stylized groups of figures, vivid colors, and shell-like facial features, this series calls attention to the collective histories, ancestral teachings (Gaga), and cultural memories borne by the ancestors. For the artist, the ancestral spirits are not objects of worship, but rather shared spiritual symbols of the community. The series seeks to bring Atayal culture into dialogue with Christian faith, while exploring new ways of interpreting and carrying these traditions forward through creation, renewal of life, and cultural identity.
