Strands, 2003
01 Tainan Art Museum

Created in 2001 following his 1998 solo exhibition Murmuring, this series marked an important turning point in Fang Wei-wen’s artistic practice. First exhibited in the basement of Prototype Art in Wu Garden, Tainan, the work focuses on self-identity and heterogeneous experiences across different times and spaces. By grafting discarded materials with diverse substances, Fang constructs a fragmented and penetrable sense of the body. Using “parasitism” as a metaphor, the work explores the fluid relationships among language, consciousness, memory, and identity.
