Tang Te-chang Memorial Park (Min Sheng Green Park)
About the work
On the right side of the painting is a bust of lawyer Tang Te-chang, created by Chiu Huo-sung. In the distant left background is a standing statue of Sun Yat-sen, while the middle distance depicts Tang Te-chang Memorial Park, which at the time still featured a pond, along with several figures. The background shows the Tainan Prefecture Government Office during the Japanese colonial period, which is now the National Museum of Taiwan Literature. The artist deliberately emphasizes the bust while blurring the scenery on the left. He also altered the inscription on the pedestal to read, “Democratic Martyr, Died for Righteousness, Lawyer Tang Te-chang,” thereby affirming Tang’s commitment to justice and his pursuit of democracy in Taiwan, while simultaneously critiquing the injustice and oppression under colonial and authoritarian regimes.
