Lying Slowly In the Rapid World

About the work
At the center of this work is a cradle that combines the form of a pregnant woman’s body with that of a pirate ship, and the cradle slowly rocks within the exhibition space. In the background, a video captures the area around Tainan’s East Gate Roundabout and Tang Te-chang Memorial Park. This work emerged from Chen Yen-yi and Huang Yi-min’s experience of preparing to welcome a new life. Confronted with the anxiety and rapid changes of the world around them, the artists use the cradle as a symbol of the purity and stability of life at its beginning. The contrast between the rapidly moving urban imagery and the cradle’s slow, gentle rocking conveys their hopes and blessings for the child: That even in a fast-moving world, one might continue to experience the tenderness of life and find the freedom to soar.
