About the work
Commissioned specifically for this exhibition, this site-specific work originated from Yang’s exploration of Tang Te-chang Memorial Park and research into its history. The artist takes as her point of departure the fountain installed during the Japanese colonial period, which is no longer in use, reflecting on an image of flowing historical memories that remain long after the sound of water has disappeared. At the same time, she approaches Tainan’s roundabouts from the perspective of a visitor, responding to the city’s distinctive experience of movement through a network of interconnected roads that can feel almost labyrinthine. Memories of the landscape, traffic signs, and the symbolic forms of roundabouts are transformed into fired-clay forms and strung together to create a suspended curtain. Visitors can walk through and around the work, experiencing the interplay between urban space, historical memory, and bodily perception as they shift between viewing the work as a whole from a distance and observing its individual patterns up close.
