Spirit of Labour: Zhi Nu

About the work
This series draws inspiration from trade union banners and membership certificates from the Industrial Revolution, whose imagery and slogans conveyed workers’ emotions, solidarity, and hopes. Spirit of Labour: Zhi Nu is the largest work in the series to date and was previously exhibited in a former cotton mill in Hong Kong, where it paid tribute to the resilience and contributions of women textile workers. Here Kueh has combined weaving techniques with archival photographs and benedictions to evoke the bonds, care, and collective strength among women workers across generations, bringing renewed visibility to women’s labor. This is the work’s first showing in Taiwan and establishes a dialogue with the historical transformations of Tainan’s textile industry.
