Puna/Umbilical cord, Return to the origin

Rahic Talif 2022

About the work

“Puna,” which means “navel” in Amis, is one of the works in Rahic Talif’s Space of Fifty Steps series. The artist primarily uses marine plastic waste as a medium to respond to contemporary marine environmental challenges and the symbiotic relationship between humans and the ocean. The vortex at the center of the work evokes an umbilical cord connecting life to its source, and positions the ocean as a maternal body that nurtures all forms of life. The flowing ocean symbolizes the cyclical journey of life—from birth and drifting to a return to its origin—evoking a self-renewing cosmic order.
