About the work
These photographs capture Yeh Shih-tao (1925-2008) in his later years and were taken by photographer Lin Po-liang in 1998 as part of Countenances of Literature: Portraits of Literary Giants of Taiwan. The project brought Lin to locations including Tainan’s Martial Temple and the Old City of Zuoying, Kaohsiung. In one image, Yeh sits on a bamboo chair at the Martial Temple, turning toward the camera with a deeply contemplative gaze that subtly reveals the scars of his experience during Taiwan’s White Terror. In another, taken in his study in Zuoying, the aging writer remains bent over his desk, absorbed in writing. These photographs are not only portraits of a literary figure, but also valuable visual testimony to the history of Taiwanese literature.
