The Virtual and Real in Cyclic Succession
About the work
"Selfless Merit, Endless Cycles" speaks of the eternal cycles of nature. Structurally, the work anchors the organic curvature of bamboo with a grounded square base. Spatially, its bamboo framework defines a "Negated Space School"—an open sanctuary through which light and wind freely pass. Temporally, rather than resisting decay, the piece embraces the bamboo's weathering and maintenance. In its first year, vibrant greens and vivid yellows exert a resilient tension; by the second, rich, grounded browns reveal the marks of time; by the third, the bamboo fades into a soft, silvery grey, arriving at a minimalist quietude. Sacrificial elements—bamboo strips and burlap mesh bags—are rewoven and replaced annually through the "School Workshops." Here, the act of "repair" itself becomes the exhibition's most vital and recurring participatory practice. Beneath the semi-circular canopy, the interplay of presence and absence, light and shadow, is achieved through varying grid densities—some sections are densely woven with bamboo or burlap, others left open. Under Tainan's abundant sunlight, the layering of matter and void projects, a dynamic, dappled matrix of shadows across the ground, manifesting the cycle of time.
