Procession – Tapani Urban Theatre

About the work
The work takes the Tapani Incident as the narrative core of an urban theater performance, and transforms the history of the uprising into a performative art activity unfolding through the city. Beginning at the Taiwan Prefectural City God Temple, next to the former site of the Xilai Temple (between No. 121 and 123, Qingnian Road), the procession moves through the streets, calling upon the spirits of the dead, passing through Tang Te-chang Memorial Park, and following Nanmen Road to the Judicial Museum. This art performance takes walking as a means of writing history. Street processions, chanting, and repetitive, uncanny cycles create a temporal structure in which past lives and the present continuously overlap, allowing spirits, bodies, and urban space to permeate one another. Through hallucinatory wandering, performative action, and improvisational theater, the work dispenses with a singular linear narrative, and allows history to emerge through fragmentation, repetition, and recurrence. By intervening in public space through the body, the work not only reconfigures collective memories of the Tapani Incident, but also transforms the city into a living ritual site, where suppressed histories can find their voices once again .
